Day 11. 20 June 2021
St George
Another lovely morning walk along the Balonne Riverbank to start the day. It was still only 3 degrees this morning, but it felt much warmer with the sun shining and without the cool breeze that we've had for the past week. One not so nice sight that I'm seeing each day is a large amount of dead galahs around, apparently a result of mass baiting the mice plague. It's a distressing to read the painful death these birds experience. After breakfast and a few domestic duties, we headed out along the Carnarvon highway for about 80km to the very small town of Thallon which has a population of about 257. The main attraction here is 4 magnificently painted grain silos. William the Northern Hairy Nosed Wombat is also a local attraction. This species once inhabited the area but is now extinct here. After a short stay, and many photographs, we headed back about 30km along the Carnarvon highway towards St George to the Nindigully Pub for lunch. Nindigully has a grand population of nine, but the number of visitors at the pub exceeded that at least by 10-fold. Nindigully Pub is known as the oldest and longest continually licensed pub in Qld after being transformed from shearer's accomodation to a licensed pub in 1864, and remains in original condition. The pub was also used as a staging post during the Cobb & Co era. The burgers for lunch were surprisingly good. It was nice sitting in this historical setting eating lunch in the warm sun, and enjoying the sounds of a couple singing country tunes. From here, it was back to St George, to prepare for our departure to Roma tomorrow. Another evening gathered around the fire with new friends and home made pizza for nibbles, topped off another nice day.
