13 Jun 2021 - Gilgandra to Lightning Ridge

Day 4. 13 Jun 2021

Gilgandra to Lightning Ridge 290 km

The caravan park at Gilgandra was quite small, and I initially had some trouble hooking up the van. Eventually, I got it sorted and we were on our way for the 290km trip to Lightning Ridge

It was a very pleasant drive, and after 50kms we had reached our first planned stop for the day - Gulargambone. We had originally wanted to stay here, but the long weekend rodeo 50 kms away in Coonamble had all accomodation including caravan parks booked out in in the area. For such a small rural town, Gulargambone had a lot to see and enjoy including the Water Tower artwork by John Murray,  a bronze bullock sculpture, numerous corrugated iron galahs around town and the colourful Bourbah Street Murals. Great to see these small towns being brought back to life.

After many photos, we continued to Coonamble where the largest rodeo in the southern hemisphere was taking place - it certainly looked massive as we drove past. On the way through, we saw more lovely water tower art work, but we continued driving to a rest stop for lunch at about 50km from Walgett.
After a nice break in the quiet surrounds (even along the highway it was so quiet), we continued onwards through Walgett to Lightning Ridge, arriving at about 3.30pm.

After we set up in the Lightning Ridge Holiday Park, we set off to stretch the legs and take in some of the town's colourful street art and stunning bougainvillea colours in the setting sunlight. We had a most enjoyable day.
